What Happens When A Piece of Sodium is Placed in Water?

What Happens in the chemical reaction where a piece of very reactive sodium metal is placed in a container of water?

  1. Sodium reacts with water like an acid:
    2 Na + 2 H2O –> 2 NaOH + H2
The reaction is strongly exothermic. And since the melting point of Soduim is 97.8 °C it melts. The heat transferred to the local environment ignites the hydrogen that is produced. The hydrogen burns with a bright yellow flame.
Water in the air can also cause a layer of sodium hydroxide to develop on exposed surfaces which is why elemental sodium is stored under hexane or something similar.
