Are labor unions necessary? Do they serve a societal good?
In the past unions were very necessary, because there was no one to protect the worker from companies. Now there are many labor laws and lobbying groups to serve the same purpose…does this make unions redundant?
Things to consider:Longshoreman average around $100,000/year and have little to no educationUAW forced GM to hire people that sit [...]

Certainly in China, workers have a long lunch break where they have a snooze at their desk to replenish their energy (possibly cos they have to work so hard!). Also, in Spain the siesta is well thought of.

Do skilled workers have a better life if they stay in the country ofc their birth? Australia is looking for skilled workers but emigrating is usually a very stressfull process.

When working your final two weeks notice at work how should you go about getting jobs to keep you occupied when your manager takes away your responsibilities?
I currently have two weeks left at work. Since I handed in my notice my manager has given me nothing to do. My jobs tend to come in by email and my inbox is empty! I keep asking for things to do and after a while I will get a bit of data entry or [...]
Other than pay, what motivates you in the work place?
There’s the "Big 5 Personality" theory that suggests differnt people are motivated by different things, and this isn’t always a hard earned pound/dollar/rubel.
The you have the classics such as Maslow with his fabulous hierarchy of needs.
But what do you think? What do you get out of your jobs? What keeps you going?
Does anyone actually care about their job or do you just do it for the money?
There must be more to life than work! I cannot believe we are put on this planet just to spend most of our days doing something relentless and boring for a few quid that we spend on rubbish or leave in our bank account for the taxman when we are dead?
Are we really fulfilling [...]
For those who cannot get into work (not work from home either.) Would they still get paid for not going to work, due to adverse weather conditions?

What will I remember?
When I’m older and I look back on my college years, will I remember all the hard work I did or will I remember going out and having fun? Does anyone wish they’d spent more time doing one or the other when they were in education? I’m finding it hard to get the balance right [...]
Now semi retired I seem busier than when working full time
When my father retired I had to tell him that it was harder to get to see him and needed to phone him to make an appointment to get hold of him.His reply was I do not know how I had time before to do a full time job.Is this because we get slower at [...]

Why when Age Discrimination Legislation took effect in October was the national mandatory retiring age not abolished, and do you think everybody should have personal freedom to decide themselves at what age if any they should retire from working?
I checked through the Parliamentary Debate on this and was surprised to find MPs from Labour, Conservatives and Lib-Dems all seemed unhappy to have any legislation against age discrimination and apparently against abolition of mandatory retirement age. But the government did say the need or otherwise for a default retirement age will be "reviewed" at [...]
I need some advice about my daughter’s job.
She works for a Virgin Active gym on a rota system, the manager keeps giving her a late shift (2pm-11pm) followed by an early shift the next day (6.30am-3.30) This seems really strange to me, as she doesn’t get home untill 11.30pm so doesn’t get to bed untill midnight, then has to get up at [...]

How do you know you are making the right decision?
Most of you know I have been trying to decide for some time now whether to leave my placement year in London and move up north. Well I have decided to take the plunge and do it because ultimately I know I will be so much happier.
But now my work collegues and friends are trying [...]
Teaching skills to criminals
An article in one of the popular rags this week had an interesting article where prisoners in a low-security offenders institute were being given jobs in the local community, for low wages.
Great!
However, one of the more popular jobs was at a "Timpson’s" store in the nearby town.
In case you didn’t know, Timpson’s offers a key [...]
