Is The Book of Counted Sorrows real?

Dean Koontz has lines from the book in every one of his books. Is the Counted Sorrows actually another of his books, or does he compose just the lines he uses each time. Is it a real book from which he quotes?

What makes a good film or TV adaptation of a book?

I’m currently watching a BBC version of Dracula from the 70s which claims to be the most faithful adaptation of the story ever made. It’s got the events and the dialogue and the period trappings more or less right, but seems to have missed the point that Dracula is meant to be a horror story. [...]

Literary long shot: Does anyone nkow of an author called (something like) Julian Ross Maclaren who wrote a book called "Stuff to give to the troops" ?

*It’s really vague I know and I have drawn a blank. A local author here in Lewes wants to know where he can get this book, or just the publiasher’s name or anything that can help him track a copy down. So I said I’d ask you. P S The small pic is Lewes Castle, [...]

Why is the English language lacking the myriad of radiantly descriptive words available in conversation?

There are many words which are used on an every-day basis, but there are even more which perform the function of many of these every-day words that are not used. Is this because of a lack of knowledge, or is it because the language has been dumbed-down? Regards…

What do you think of rewriting childrens books to be more politically correct?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=3924… Saw this article and though how absurd it was to rewrite books like that. I hardly think children even think of racism and such when they are reading it…Thats just my opinion but what do you think of it?

When did it become fashionable to make heroes out of criminals in fiction?

Where did the concept of criminals as loveable rogues, or cool anti-heroes come from? When did literature (or theatre, or cinema – I don’t know where it started) begin to celebrate criminality? Although Falstaff is superficially attractive, it’s clear that Shakespeare doesn’t want us to like him too much. Dickens never has criminal heroes. So [...]

i know that some schools have "catcher in the rye" but not all. what about "1984"? are there any other books which you think it would be beneficial for kids to read? similarly, what films would you advise people to watch? not just because they’re good or funny, but because they have become "cult classics" [...]

Whence comes the following?

"With my left hand I speak lies and with my right hand I speak truths. You seek to know the answers and I will show you how to steal the truth but only if you see with your heart will I show you the lies."

"In Cold Blood" (Truman Capote)

Why did the author of such frothy and frivolous fare as "Breakfast at Tiffanys" end up writing this account of the actions of two ruthless psychopaths? Capote got wrapped up in this story to the extent that he nearly suffered a nervous breakdown. Why did this story and the subsequent meetings with its protagonists have [...]

what is the meaning of ‘licking my bed sores’?

I wonder if the expression ‘licking my bedsores’ is commonly used as a phrase in colloquial conversation in America. Someone said: I was talking while the kid was liking my bedsores. Is it an abusive expression?

Is Quidditch a rubbish game ?

My son is reading Harry Potter and thinks that Quidditch is a great game. It seems, to me, a rubbish game when the side leading 5-1 are defeated by one player the opposition team finding a golden ball in the car park. However, a quick change to the rules of cricket may save the ashes [...]

Reading the book Fight Club, and a question popped up in my mind…

Actually I wondered this after the film as well…is there any possibility Marla Singer could be a third personality of the narrator? Is there any definite reason why she couldn’t?

After years of loving and being loved, how do you know if you’ve find "the one" and are not bound to repeat past mistakes?

I’ve been lucky enough to have been loved many times – how do you know if the one is the one? Ok, I take a long time to trust people and my partners always tend to love me more than I love them. If I think it’s not workable, I walk away knowing that I [...]
