Ok, when is a real electric car coming out?
I mean sold in North American dealerships. Not concept, testing, shows, hybrids, none of that. When will it be possible to go out, test-drive and buy an electric vehicle? Very tired of big 3 BS.
Why aren’t we pushing harder for better fuel economy in cars?
Oil is not going to become more plentiful – EVER.
Why aren’t we pushing for more hybrids or all-electric cars? Only GM is working on an all-electric car slated for 2010, and that’s not 100% certain.
Why aren’t we generally pushing for 45 MPG or better on as many vehicles as we can?
Wars have been waged and [...]

I repair cars in my spare time. 2 years ago I started work on a car for a man, the work to be done totaled
Should smoking be banned whilst driving?
There are other things you cannot do whilst driving.
Why is setting something on fire, holding it in a hand, making smoke which could limit vision, and taking a drug ok?

Should only those who can’t justify needing 4×4s be the ones to pay the extra proposed tax increases?
I am sick of hearing about the tax they intend putting on 4×4s but what really get my goat is I will end up paying because of all the people who don’t need 4×4s but still have them.
Why can’t they only put these proposed high taxes on those who can’t justify needing a 4×4 [...]

Which company provides the cheapest car insurance for 17 year old learner drivers?
I appreciate that this is a fairly complicated question, and is probably based upon car type, etc., but is there one company that offers halfway decent rates on insurance for young learner drivers?
How much veggie oil can you legaly use in your car before having to declare it for tax?
I have heard rumour its been legal, since 31st July this 2007 to use Veggie oil without paying extra tax provided you do not use more than 2,500 litres per annum. Is this true?
I have just had a bump in my car, any help would be appreciated
I have just bumped my car in to the back of a small van, I am fully insured, but the gentleman I bumped into mentioned paying for the damage privately, I only bumped into his bumper I wasn’t going any speed, is this a good idea or is it better to go through my insurance [...]
what would happen is we changed petrol for hydrogen
bmw being themselves can make a hydrogen and oxygen powered car by next year!!! and a mass produced machine wouldnt be too hard afterwards,
BUT
as its exhaust is oxygen, would the earth actually get too much O2 and start killing us because the air would get too clean?
Am I right in assuming that hybrid drive only makes sense in heavy vehicles in a stop-and-go-environment?
OK, I think it like this: a hybrid means packing an electric motor plus battery alongside the conventional motor, which makes the vehicle heavier and thus less fuel-efficient, especially an already light vehicle. The system can then recover the power usually wasted on breaking, which makes it more efficient in a city environment [...]
A stopped car at the side of the road with headlamps on full beam is illegal.
Not only that, but it really gets on my nerve! Is there any other thing that people seem to do on a daily basis that’s not only wrong but gets you annoyed?
If you ‘trade in’ your old vehicle against the cost of a new one, do you still have to ensure that it is roadworthy at the point of handover?
Just looked into the question about the moped, and I wondered if this applied to cars that you trade in, too? All these ads offering
How many people are legally allowed to travel in a car designed for a driver and four passengers?
I was intrigued by this story, about a man who was stopped after 13 people were crammed into his Volvo.http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/north_west/7471102.stm
If a car has just five seats, it is breaking the law to have more than five in it?
One of the reasons this intrigues me is that many moons ago (when I was 18), I [...]
What is the best thing to do if you spot someone driving like a nutter when you are driving down the motorway?
My first instinct is to reach for the phone and contact the police before their ridiculous behaviour gets someone killed, but if I did that, I’d be breaking the law.
So what is the correct, responsible thing to do?
The incident that has prompted this was a nutter in a white van (what else?) who was weaving [...]
Driving with a cast.
I have a full leg cast on my left leg, I have learnt on a manual but not taken my test. Would it be legal for me to drive, and take my test in an automatic car, considering I will be in a cast for 6 months, and may have a paralysed foot but do [...]
What might be a reason for the engine malfunction light to show on my dash?
I have a (nearly) four year old Ford Focus. I bought it last december from a garage and until monday night it had been mechanically sound. Suddenly, driving home the accelerator became "spongey" and ineffective and the light lit up on the dash. I pulled over immediately and turned the engine off. When i restarted [...]
what’s the best way to start looking for a new car?
I know what I like to drive, but what about people who really don’t know. I know about KBB.com and edmunds.com but if there are any other good resources I’d appreciate knowing about them!

what thing could you never master? i could never master doubling the clutch on a car and i have driven many, but that is 1 thing i could never do and still cant do till this day.
Have driven many cars, some where you needed to double the clutch E.G.Morris Oxfords, Austins Cambridges etc. What thing have you never ever mastered no matter how hard you have tried?
CM, in your vast experience, which is the best car you could own? In terms of performance, reliability, looks?
It’s widely acceted that the Mercedes S class is the best car in the world. But that’s one hundred grand, so coming back down to Earth, in terms of middle-top models, Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Saab, Jaguar, Alpha, Lexus…., and including sporty Toyota’s eg Celica and the like, what’s the best make/model to go for? Think [...]
I need some suggestions for a car – new, bought for cash, mixed family rural use. UK only please.
We are contemplating buying a new (or almost-new) car. As this would be the first ever new car we bought we are a bit stuck for what would be suitable as until now we generally drove old bangers. I tried to use some online car selectors, but they are either American, can’t find what I [...]
What do you think will be the next big innovation in engine design?
Concepts I’ve seen being prototyped include:
Eliminating the valves, and having slots cut into the camshaft to act as valves instead.
Eliminating the connecting rod and small/big-end assembly. Instead, the conn-rod is cast in one piece with the piston, and the crank runs in a slot along the bottom.
Eliminating the camshaft and valves entirely, and using [...]
What was the first production car to be fitted with a multi-valve engine?
Triumph fans (I’m one) claim that Triumph’s Dolomite Spring was the first production car with a 16 valve engine as standard, back in the mid-70s.
If pressed, they will admit to a Bentley from the twenties which had a similar valve setup.
But was there anything earlier than that?
When was the overhead camshaft invented?
Lots of people believe that the overhead camshaft is a relatively recent innovation.
But I have a 1929 MG which is fitted with one.
When was the overhead camshaft actually invented?
Unusual car insurance conundrum…
I want to pay for car insurance for my friend Dave who will borrow my other friend’s (Adrian) VW caravelle for 2 weeks in July to go to France. This seems to have sent the bods in the call centres into apoplexy.Where or how can I get insurance for Dave? Adding him to Adrian’s policy is [...]
I was given a clock for my car but the stickies that came withit will stick to my dashboard. What can i use to stick it?
I’ve tried wiping the surface down, using new sticky pads, using sticky velcro, sticking duct tape on first all just fall off. I have a sticker to remind me of the next service in the top right of the windscreen and the clock will stick to that but due to the rake of the windscreen [...]
Why is this car worth so much?
http://www.wjactv.com/automotive/18398518/detail.html
I read this in the paper today, but i can’t fathom why it is worth so much?Is it a supply and demand thing? It doesn’t say in the article i have posted, but in the paper it said only 17 were made, is that why it is worth so much?Is it drivable?
how do car insurance companies work out what you car is worth?
I was woke up by a lorry this morning thought nothing off it but when I opened the curtains some time later I seen it was parked out side my house at a funny angle, when I went out side I seen it had crashed/slid into my car.
Anyway I have been advised it is repairable/touched [...]
Do you repair/maintain your own car?
At the moment you can.
But new Euro legislation is intending to remove that right, insisting that all repair and maintenance work is carried out by franchised dealers.
This means that you won’t be able to repair your own car any more.
And independent repair centres won’t be able to do it either.
You’ll be stuck with main dealer [...]
Whose insurance is it?
OK, it’s a bit of a contrived example.
Imagine you were to legally drive a car to a location and leave it there for another driver to collect, several days later.
Your insurance expires (or you stop it) after you drive it, but prior to the other driver collecting it.
The other driver takes out an insurance policy [...]
