Do you favour Sunday as a day of rest?

In the UK we’ve nearly always had some activities on a Sunday. In 1993 I went to live in Ireland and everything was shut all day Sunday. At first I didn’t like it, but after a while it was a great day.
Now, Ireland is the same as everywhere else. Shops open, pubs open and so on.
There is some talk in Scotland about bringing back Sunday as a day of rest (not in any biblical sense that we all have to go to church!) but shops closed, leaving only recreational places open, swimming pools, cinemas, restaurants and pubs.
Do you think this is a good idea?

With this one, I have to be quite selfish, being that I have to accomodate the confines of my medical conditions and the unpredictable problems these sometimes create.

What I mean is, if I could guarantee that my condition would be constant, without fail, then I'd support shutting shops as a good idea, but because I can't and I don't know what my health is going to present me with from one day to the next(less sometimes), then I need the flexibility and convenience of having a shop open outside the normal, and preferably with extended hours too, because I don't know when I'll be able to get to the shop if I'm going through a particularly bad patch.

In theory, it is a very good idea. Unfortunately, with both adults in the family working long hours, there is the difficulty of shopping. Saturday is bad enough as it is, with shops crowded. If two days shopping had to be crammed into one, it would be hellish.

I shan't mention what non-christians would have to say, but I think, on the whole, that we all could benefit from one relaxing day a week.
