Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) is doing it RIGHT!! He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them. He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies. He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects. Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.
He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again but only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel. When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.
He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value. When the inmates complained, he told them…..this is a good one……"This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."
He bought Newt Gingrich's lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place. You have to love this guy!!
More on the AZ Sheriff:
With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports:
About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to
their government-issued pink boxer shorts. On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before. Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks. "It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 1/2 years. "It's inhumane."
Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is
not one bit sympathetic He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and
they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes… so shut your damned mouths."

I won't argue that he does not policies that make for the perfect jail! This is very true!

Hi BMC, he has been one of my favorites for a long time.
nwoolhouseuk - November 20th, 2009
LOL, good morning Dick. I think we should run him for president. He is the MAN a real hero in so many regards Send him a note of thanks will you? He really needs the support in terms of numbers. His work effects all of us, it is astounding the impact his work has on our economies.
whitehousewire - November 20th, 2009
Good morning to you BMC, happy fathers day also. I really do like his approach to his work and think the whole nation needs to adopt a program similar to his, or something like we saw in " escape from New York " I am tired of supporting the dregs of our society in a manner I as a law abiding citizen can't afford for my self or family, all in the name of political correctness ( bull s41t ), While I do not agree with the death penalty as it doesn't work and killing is still killing I do think we can and should make them responsible for thier own food clothing and other creature comforts, the society in general should not have to provide for them.
meganspanda - November 20th, 2009
Happy fathers day to you as well, law enforcement is a tough job a thankless job, when you combine political correctness and the restrictions that go along with PC it makes law enforcement even more impossible. The people that work for Joe I am sure have a much better attitude and get more done due to the overlooking of political pressures.
I believe in capital punishment very strongly, I totally disagree with you on that one. It works when it is used. Its use stops the reoccurrence of a crime committed by that individual, when the ultimate punishment (death) is a possible punishment that does act as a deterrent to crime, (those are the statistics by polling) it also gives closure and makes others believe that there is justice for all. The rest of the crimes that aren't capital offences should be handled reminding the inmates every minute of every day that they are incarcerated that they absolutely hate where they are (no frills. No tv, radio, movies, conical visits,) mandatory 12 hours of very hard labor at least 5 days a week and study available two days a week subjects of their choosing. Nothing more. I don't care what age, social status, gender or anything else. Equal opportunity incarceration for all. That is rehabilitation and job training all rolled into one. I guess we can't agree on everything lol.

MBC even in those states that practice capital punishment on a regular basis such as Texas they still have killings on a fairly regular basis, so I can only conclude that it is not an effective form of deterrent but only removes the one individual. If we put them in and never let them out and made them accountable for their own life and creature comforts it may prove to be a more effective deterrent of committing capital crimes in the first place, with that said I do admit that those states that do practice capital punishment do have a lower rate of capital crime that those who don't use it. And I do think we are still quite close to agreeing on the important things with some minor differences and enjoy our discussions much.

Me too Dick, I enjoy our inter action. I would be boring to agree on everything and very important to have exposure to other ideas. This discussion was making me think about what is known as petty crime, I have had break-ins on my vehicles and office many times to me those crimes are not in any way petty. I caught one in the act last year and kicked the guys ass. If he had had a weapon his next stop would have been the morgue. I have not tolerance for having my anything being violated, none at all. I am tired of seeing this crap go on in my city and dealing with it's fallout. We need to declair ZERO CRIME ZONE where we live and enforce it.
whitehousewire - November 20th, 2009
Yeppers I also have a verrrry low tolerance of crime of any nature and do keep my self prepared at all times, as I do live in a high petty crime area, I caught one trying to burglar my shed and held him with a 12 gauge until the sheriff came, I got into some trouble but was not held or charged with any crime. Enough is enough!

Alright! One should feel safe and the only way I know of that happening is to be safe that is to say be armed.
whitehousewire - November 21st, 2009
My point exactly, the sheriff had to give me some grief as we were outside of my dwelling and it is his job, but he later came back to shake my hand and thank me as they had been trying to get their hands on the guy for quite a while and I just handed him over to them. Strangely I haven't had a problem since I guess the word got passed that I am armed and will use it , prior to that I had been burglarized on 15 different occasions over 20 years.

Hes evil and runs a roach infested hell hole.
whitehousewire - November 21st, 2009
I don't know anyone that said or even suggested that he is a nice guy, only that he has a lot to teach the rest of the country in the handling of prisoners, the last I heard he has the lowest recidivism rate in the country, wonder why ? And as for those body guards I do suspect he has made many enemies that would take his life in a New York minute given a chance.

Lisa, where did you find this information? I am very interested.
meganspanda - November 21st, 2009
your right Lisa
lilahsilva - November 21st, 2009
I do so agree Scott.
meganspanda - November 21st, 2009
Yes we do need more that are willing to do the job.
I know two prison guards, they hate their jobs not because that they don't have an important job only because they aren't allowed to do their jobs. The stories that I hear make me sick. Criminals can thank God that I weren't in charge of them, it presence would be super hell on earth for them, if they got out they would never come back.

Thank You ElegantSwan, he will appreciate it and will go along way with expressing public opinion (polling) to move his arguments forward.
