"BRITAIN faces one of its bitterest winters for 100 years, with temperatures set to plummet to -17C (1.4F), forecasters warned last night."

Do you treat your dog like your child? My daughter thinks I do…. Is that bad?

I just love my dogs, and since my kids don’t live real close they are alot of company to me. They always love me no matter what! They always give me hugs and cuddle. I would be so lost if they weren’t here. Is that abnormal?

Is there a channel amongst the hundreds on Sky, where I can watch Prisoner Cell Block H?

I’ve been trying to find a picture of the gibbous Earth, taken from space, showing the dark side illuminated by the Moon…….

All the pictures of Earth that I’ve seen show the dark side as very dark.
Can anyone help or is it that the moonlight is too faint to show up in a photograph?

DVD burning troubles…

I am puzzled. I have a DVD +/- DVD burning drive (A Benq DW1655) and a pile of blank DVDs. Some are just +R DVDs, and I now have some +RWs. Sticking a +R in the drive will allow me to burn stuff, yet sticking a +RW will give me errors. I can’t even format [...]

What should I do?

I am 24, living with my parents, the only son, have a stable relationship with a very sweet girl. I love her truly. BUT, idont have a career. I am lost, in this world. I took philosophy as a subject and I believe in the great words men have said, I feel connected to another [...]

Follow up: Ethnic prejudice in the United States – resolving or still endemic. The consensus…

opinion to my original question was that ethnic prejudice was declining in the U.S., and that it was more illusory than real. Yet an article released in Newsweek reports an alarming increase in the number of white supremacist groups, who have simply changed their rhetoric to a "kinder, gentler" form of hatred, so as to [...]

Law question

How hard is it to stay honest while voting? Stumble across a question where the best answer is from

Was this a scam?

We just received a phone call claiming to be from Barnardos.
My wife was asked for her bank details in order to set up a direct debit. The person wasn’t happy when my wife queried this.
Has anyone else heard of this?

What’s the longest time you’ve spent working for a company (or in the same place)? Do you change jobs regularly? Have you ever completely changed your career path?

If so, what factors lead to your decision? Are you pleased that you made the change? How did you know that it was more than a temporary "ennui" with the job? Did you risk losing much if the change didn’t work out? Were those close to you supportive or did they urge you to reconsider?

Why do so many users fail to follow up and comment on the answers to their questions?

I really don’t understand, if someone asks a question that has at least some importance to them the failure to keep the question and answers alive by responding with comments. I most often find more information contained within the comments than in the question or the answers. Please explain

How do children get lice so easily at school?

It seems none of the kids have lice before they start school, then they all get it from school. How does that happen? And lice can’t jump or fly, and you rarely see kids putting their heads together. How do the lice spread so easily if all they can do is walk?

how is pain measured? does the pain experienced by a small child compare equally to the pain experienced by an adult?

my 2-and-a-half-year-old godson has been ill recently, and i’ve caught whatever it was he had – mostly he was feverish, petulant, and occasionally produced astounding volume levels from his little lungs – i’m feverish, sulky, and on the verge of tears from the pain even though i’m taking as many painkillers as i can without [...]

Certainly in China, workers have a long lunch break where they have a snooze at their desk to replenish their energy (possibly cos they have to work so hard!). Also, in Spain the siesta is well thought of.

Would it be justified to bomb Tehran and iran in general if there was solid evidence they were on the path to attain aromic weapons?

In today’s news: http://www.guardian.co.uk/iran/story/0,,1752063,00.html (12th April ‘06) Iran is suggesting that its nuclear capabilities are very real and operationsl. Although there are other threats to world peace – including the actions of the UK, America and allies, would it be in the greater good to bomb Iran if this could make sure no [...]

What is the term called when you sleep short in short time distances instead of sleeping long in lon time distances?

I am looking for the term. I saw it once on TV and forgot it. Babies do that when they are newborn. Usually it is like sleeping thirty minutes of sleeping and then two hours awake, then sleeping again and so on…

The French foreign minister is now saying the world should prepare for war with Iran. Considering their stance on other conflicts why now?

The link below gives a fuller story, but it seems to be an unusual change in policy to me.

Do you think the way the British Sailors were released by Iran was an attempt to humiliate the British?

I think it may have been, although I feel that the Iranian Government just wants to be noticed. Iran wants prestige and recognition as a nation, not war.

What effect would a change in the law about ’soft drugs’ in the Netherlands have on the UK and other EU countries?

For over 30 years, the Netherlands has had the most liberal drugs policy in the world. But all that is about to change. After this week’s parliamentary debate on the drugs issue, it looks like even the Nethferlands’ world-famous ‘coffee shops’ may not escape the present government’s reforms.

Imagine you have to choose a disability to have…

Would you choose something with a clearly visible manifestation and put up with strange looks, weird pity responses but at least not need to explain all the time…
OR
Would you choose something with no visible manifestation – no need to suffer strange looks, but a need to explain your needs a lot of the time…

There are benefits to a Totalitarian society (low crime, personal safety, elderly care, community etc.), why is it that in allegedly ‘free and democratic’ society, we have to forego these things? Is it the human imperative that we need to be controlled?

Are we heading for a Summer of discontent?

I guess a lot of members on here are too young to remember the "Winter of Discontent" in the 1970s.
Strikes caused Power cuts, food shortages and refuse collections to halt.
The strikes were about a government cap on pay at 5%, and began in private industry before spreading to the public sector.

How can I get my buddy’s name off of my e-mail account?

I just realized that my friend’s name is attached to my e-mail account. It is thankfully the one that I use for personal junk, but, that it is headlined by Andrew and not Thessalonius is a little odd. He set it up for me recently and I think that he mistakenly stuck his name in [...]

Reuse of names

I’ve been looking through my family tree and found examples of children that have died in infancy and the name is given to a child later on. Was this a common prctice in the 16,17,1800s?

Is there a ‘correct’ way of referring to specific meals?

Breakfast is fairly simple – it does what it says on the cereal packet – but what about lunch/dinner (i.e. the meal eaten about five hours after breakfast), and worse still, tea/dinner/supper (i.e. the meal eaten about five hours later than lunch/dinner)?
What is the *correct* way of referring to these meals?

Why do olives, preserved in olive oil, have such a short shelf life?

Advice on jars of olives is to eat them within 14 days of opening, and loose ones from the supermarket carry the instruction to eat them within 2 days of purchase.
It doesn’t say ‘best eaten by’ which would insinuate that they may not be at there best after a certain date – it usually say [...]
