Napoleon did not have successors of his family. After his fall, the Bourbon family was restored to the throne, until 1830 when the Orleans family- actually a branch of the Bourbon- came to power. Following the 1848 revolution, which led to the fall of Louis Philippe I, Louis Napoleon Bonaparte -a nephew of Napoleon- became president and then, in 1852, emperor under the name Napoleon III. This was the Second Empire. Finally, after the defeat and fall of Napoleon III by Prussia, in 1870, the French III republic was born. So it was in 1870 that the French stopped having monarchs.
